The enduring violence and hate perpetrated against the AAPI community is horrific and unsettling; however, these atrocities are far from new. In this webinar, we will chronicle how United States’ policies and norms have historically situated AAPI populations as perpetual foreigners, which has served to justify the anti-Asian violence we continue to witness today. We give particular attention to the workplace context, where AAPI employees are subjected to stereotypes, narratives, and racist ideologies that have existed for centuries. More specifically, we will discuss the dilemma Asian professionals face when seeking a sense of belonging, while also attempting to combat assimilation and cultural erasure. Coqual will present data and insights about the unique experiences of Asians in the workplace, while also sharing how ERGs can build cross-racial solidarity to strengthen the workplace climate. Attendees will learn from Dr. Esther Hio-Tong Castillo, the Founder and Director of the Chinese Immigrant Family Wellness Initiative (CIFWI). CIFWI partners with trusted local mental health professionals and community workers in Philadelphia to cultivate a culture of care at the family and community levels. Based on her expertise, Dr. Castillo will discuss how companies can curate programs and services to effectively address mental health for AAPI professionals.
